After graduating from the de Ruyter school at Flushing I wen to Amsterdam and I got a job as a 4th engineer on the Congokust. The Congokust made regular trips from Amsterdam to the coast of West Africa mostly carrying logs. I worked with a 3rd engineer J.B. van het Schip (Jan).
When I started working for Smit Loyd in December we heard about the terrible disaster which struck the Smit Loyd 102. The 102 turned over in very heavy seas in South Africa. Only 2 out of 7 seaman survived the ordeal.
